Landfill leachate treatment with robust membrane systems

Landfill leachate is one of the most demanding wastewater streams because composition, salt load, organic substances and discharge limits vary strongly from site to site.

Technical overview

Why landfill leachate needs a dedicated treatment concept

Leachate from landfills often combines high conductivity, refractory COD, ammonium, color, scaling potential and seasonal flow changes. A standard compact reverse osmosis package can be difficult to operate when the feed water contains suspended solids, organic fouling potential or fluctuating concentrations.

ROTREAT develops treatment concepts around the actual water analysis, target values and operating environment. The solution can combine pre-treatment, biological treatment, RCDT disc tube reverse osmosis, polishing steps and practical service access in a containerized or hall-installed plant.

Typical design questions

A reliable concept starts with flow rate, leachate analysis, discharge limits, concentrate handling, available space and operating mode. These inputs define recovery, membrane selection, pressure level, cleaning strategy and automation requirements.

  • COD, ammonium, conductivity and scaling risk
  • required permeate quality and local discharge limits
  • expected concentrate volume and disposal route
  • available utilities, footprint and operator access

Role of RCDT reverse osmosis

RCDT disc tube modules use open radial flow channels which support robust operation on difficult feed waters. Compared with standard spiral wound modules, the module geometry is more tolerant against fouling and easier to clean in demanding leachate applications.

  • open channel module design
  • high recovery concepts depending on water quality
  • service-friendly pressure tube modules
  • chemical and operational cleaning strategies

Containerized implementation

Many landfill sites benefit from modular containerized systems. They can be pre-assembled, protected against weather, expanded in stages and designed with service access for pumps, valves, membranes and instrumentation.

  • modular pre-treatment and RO stages
  • automation and remote support options
  • practical access for operation and maintenance
  • scalable capacity for changing leachate volumes
