Reverse osmosis for landfill leachate

Reverse osmosis is a strong barrier technology for dissolved salts and many persistent substances in leachate treatment, but the membrane system must match the feed water.

Technical overview

RO performance depends on feed preparation and module geometry

Landfill leachate can contain high salt concentrations, variable organic load, scaling components and substances that are hard to degrade biologically. Reverse osmosis can produce high-quality permeate, but stable operation depends on pre-treatment, hydraulic design and cleaning practice.

ROTREAT uses RCDT disc tube technology where the feed water is too difficult for conventional compact spiral wound arrangements. The open channel design supports higher tolerance against fouling and scaling potential.

When RO is used in leachate treatment

Reverse osmosis is often selected when discharge limits require strong retention of salts, COD fractions, color or trace substances. It can be used after biological treatment, after physical-chemical pre-treatment or as part of a multi-stage membrane concept.

  • polishing after biological treatment
  • salt and persistent COD retention
  • high permeate quality requirements
  • retrofit of existing treatment plants

Why RCDT modules are relevant

The RCDT module forms open flow channels between hydraulic discs and membrane cushions. This supports crossflow across the membrane surface and practical cleanability where fouling risk is higher.

  • less sensitive to suspended and colloidal load
  • accessible cleaning behavior
  • robust pressure tube construction
  • available for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration concepts

Operational planning

A reverse osmosis plant is not only a membrane skid. Reliable operation also requires monitoring, chemical dosing where needed, cleaning-in-place routines, spare part strategy and qualified service support.

  • conductivity, pressure and flow monitoring
  • membrane cleaning intervals based on trend data
  • concentrate management
  • operator training and service support
